Let us discuss about Civil Services Exam in detail. In this article I am going to ask some question and giving answer like frequently asked questions about Indian Civil Services Examination.

What is IAS, IPS, IFS?

First part is that whatever you want to prepare, for example IAS, IPS or IFS the system of exam is same. You have to appear for exam that is called the Civil Services Examination or now a days it is called CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test). So if you want to appear for IAS, IPS or IFS that means you have to appear for CSAT exam. This exam is conducted by a Board or Commission that is UPSC (Union Public Service Commission), So frequently it is called as UPSC exam also. But not only this exams conducted by UPSC, variety of other exams also conducted by UPSC like CDS (Combined Defence Service), NDA (National Defence Academy) etc.

In what way a person can become IAS officer?

There are two ways to become an IAS officer. If a persona already working as Civil Servant and by promotion he/she can become IAS officer. Another way is to directly appointed as IAS officer through this type of examination.

Now, question is that when you appointed as IAS officer?

First, You have to pass this Civil Service Examination and this exam is divided into three parts.

1. Civil Services Preliminary Examination
2. Civil Services Main Examination
3. Personal Interview (With Board Members)

After getting success in Interview phase you may appointed as IAS officer. Why I am calling MAY BE is because, the reason is that depending upon your marks secured in all phases of this exam. So, its not necessary after passing out Civil Services Exam you must appointed as IAS officer. You can be sent to IPS, IFS or other various categories which are there for appointment. Don't be under impression that by passing this exam immediately you are appointed as IAS officer. Next is the UPSC Interview part, after the interview if you are selected then thorough training is there.

What is the composition of Preliminary Exam? or In what way the prelims exam is there?

We have already aware the all parts of this examination. Now first part of this exam is Preliminary examination and obviously large number of students are appearing for this exam. Because any graduate or a person who is appearing for graduation exam, but from a UGC recognized university. Then only he/she is liable for this examination, and your age must be 21 to 30.

The prelims paper is divided into two parts:

  • Paper I : General Studies - (200 marks)
    Duration : Two hours

  • Paper II : CSAT - (200 marks)
    Duration: Two hours

In both the papers you have to appear on the same day of examination. Now, incase of prelim exam; keep in mind that whenever we are talking that prelims examination preparation we are carrying out many people are saying NO first prepare for Mains then Prelims is easy. YES! that was right concept but keep in mind that "That Was Right Concept" that not is right concept.

Probability Observation

The reason is that from 2011 the syllabus is changed. In old days you have to prepare one optional subject and that's why this theory was right. But now a days you don't have to prepare any optional subjects. So, for prelims every student is facing same question paper, and therefore this is not right technique to prepare for Mains first and then Prelims will come automatically with that.

Well, Many people joining classes with Mains also, It is not required.
Keep in mind that From Prelims to Mains the probability of passing is very less. For example 4 lakhs candidates appearing for prelims exam, out of that approximately 10,000 to 14,000 students are selected for Mains. So from 4 lakhs to 10 to 14 thousands (1/4), then why you are joining classes for  mains also. Keep in mind that first concentrate on Prelims because this is not easy, because probability of passing out Preliminary is very less than Mains. You can also calculate it mathematically that the probability (in order to number of candidates) of passing Mains is higher than Prelims exam.
