Critical Assessment of the Non-Cooperation Movement

The non-cooperation movement gained a boost at the time of khilafat movement. The issue of khilafat non-cooperation movenebt provided a momentum to masses for raising their voices against the British rule in 1920. A special congress session was organized at Calcutta in September, 1920, approved the non-cooperation programme till the wrongs done by Punjab and khilafat issues were remedied.

Government schools colleges, court & legislative councils foreign clothes and renunciation of the government titles and honous were boycotted in this movement. Congress decided to attain swaraj as their goal through peaceful and legitimate means in this movement. Gandhi promised swaraj within a year through the non-cooperation movement. Revolutionary groups of Bengal also supported the congress programme.

When Gandhiji withdrew this movement due to chauri-chaura incident, it was the peak time for the movement. Khilafat movement went critical over Gandhi’s decision of withdrawing the movement with abandonment of the non-cooperation movement. It can be concluded that it could not realize its goal of swaraj and infect swaraj became more far reached goal now, when we evaluate the movement.

Although no progress was made on the issue taken up by the movement, the gains of the movement were not inconsequential. The movement demonstrated clearly that the nationalist movement had the support of the entire nation. People started to wear khadi and use swadeshi in place of foreign goods giving a boost to Indian Economy. Nationalist education spread in country and institutes like Jamia Milia and kashi universities came into existence.
