How does the Inter-State Council establish co-ordination between states?

Under Article 263 for establishment of Inter-state council, our constitution makes provision. It was established in 1990 by the President.

This council has the following role to perform:

  • The President may confer upon its function to discuss any Inter-State dispute and find out solution.
  • It may investigate and discuss subjects involving interest of states and/or union.
  • As the Chief Ministers are members of this council, they may express and save public opinion of each state in solution of any dispute.
  • This council may recommend for formation of such policies that would serve common interest of states.

Coordination is must between them, in times of growing inter-state trade and other relations. This role in performed by it. A common policy and understanding for them can be made possible here, by expressing its interest by each state and involving them. Such coordination is possible when representatives of every state comes together on a platform, which Inter-state council provides.
