IAS Mains General Studies Sample Answers

Topic: Sethusamudram Project

There is a sandstone reef, called Adam’s bridge at Pamban bear Rameshwaram and it is not possible for ships to navigate there, that is the reason why this project is proposed there. It will link Palk bay and Gulf of Mannar and it 300 mt. wide and 20 km. long channel costing about 200 crore rupees.

It will lessen the time taken by ships hitherto in doing a circum navigation around Sri Lanka and this will also conserve priceless fuel resources. It will also develop ports on both coasts and frequent movement of ships from eastern to western coasts and vice-versa would be possible since they would have to sail through their own territorial waters. It can help to develop economic, physical and cultural relation and track II based diplomacy and bilateral trade with Sri Lanka.

However there are some issues of concerns also related to it. Environmentalist says that it may damage bio-diversity of the Andaman & Nicobar coast and coral reefs. It may also damage ecological balance of coastal areas. Some religious sentiments are also associated with it.
