ताप की अवधारणा (Concept of Temperature): किसी वस्तु का ताप उसकी (Heatness) या ठण्डेपन (Coldness) का मापक होता है अर्थात ताप वह भौतिक राशि होती है, जिसके द्वारा हम छूकर यह ज्ञात कर सकते है कि कोई वस्तु कितनी गर्म या ठण्डी है।
