Orientation Session of UPSC Civil Services Examination - 2015

The Civil Services Exams for the Year 2014 will be notified on 17th of May, 2014, and the last date for submitting Application Online will be 16th of June, 2014. One can log on to UPSC's website or look up in the Employment news paper for details notification.

The Preliminary exam will be held on 24th of August 2014 and the Main examination will be held from 14th December 2014 for a period of 5 days.

The Prelim Exam contains two papers

  • General Studies [2 Hours and 200 Marks]
  • CSAT (Aptitude Paper) [2 Hours and 200 Marks]

Both papers conducting on same day and there are no sectional or separate papers cutoff. (Projected cutoff for CSP 2013: 230-240 out of 400)
What is important here is combined score, so when you look at the combined score out of 400 and if you scoring 230 or 240 then you have a chance to clear your prelims and go for Mains.

When you go for Mains which is hardly 15 to 16 thousands students out of more than 2.5 lakhs students will get a chance to appear.

Now in Mains you have around 9 papers to clear.

There are 4 papers for General Studies
  • GS Paper I (250 Marks) : Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society.
  • GS Paper II (250 Marks) : Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations.
  • GS Paper III (250 Marks) : Technology, Economic Development, Bo-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management.
  • GS Paper IV (250 Marks) : Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude.

Now, with these you have one optional subject to choose for the same. There are lot of subjects available and you can choose based upon you education background or possibly based on you interest for which you have two papers to write. When you go for two papers (remember again they are same like 250 questions and 3 hours of time for each paper). Post that, you have an Essay (200 Marks and can be written in the medium or language of the candidate's choice) paper and two Language papers. Language papers are qualifying in nature, wherein you marks will not counted but you have to score minimum marks in your language papers.

Language Paper (Qualifying)

One is English (300 Marks) and any other from 28 Scheduled Languages. If you clear all these papers then you have a chance to go for Personal Interview. Your marks of GS papers, Optionals & Interview will club together and that clubbing of around 2000 marks will be basis for your rank for USPC allocation of the service.

Generally, student has to be aware that this is how this entire examination process works.

  • Prelim Exam: August 2014
  • Mains Exam: December 2014
  • Interview: April-May 2015
  • Final Result: August-September 2015

So, you have to keep an year in margin for your preparation specially for the exam prospective.

Few Preparation Tips

  • Start Preparing for IAS at least 10-12 months before the Prelims.
  • Get the previous years solved question papers and course syllabus.
  • Refer to the question papers before and after reading any topic.
  • Refer one good newspaper, one current affairs magazine, standard books and study notes only.
  • Routinize your day to cover the IAS syllabus within a short time.
  • Learn to prepare micro notes for quick revision
